Description: Comprehensive Branding and Website Design
Client: PopMatters
Year: 2015

PopMatters is an online digest of media, culture, and commentary founded in 1993. As Creative Director at Sparkfactor, I was approached to create a comprehensive new brand system, website design, UX and information architecture. The design goals for the website were clear architecture, beautiful type, and bringing the brand to life through functional components rather than heavy embellishment. The redesign succeeded in energizing PopMatters readership, social voice, and significantly increasing the value and inventory of their advertising space – a primary objective of the project. Ad revenue and paging increased while improving user experience. Vice was added to the list of advertisers as a direct result of my work. PopMatters subsequently added e-books to the range of their brand channels, further deepening brand reach outside social and online. An extra feature of the identity suite that won immediate applause was an oversized note card. The alternate reverse side features an original photograph I took on-location earlier in the year.
